Lard in the Time of Corona

You’ve had your year of living dangerously and distantly, scurrying away from one-time friends and strangers, hiding your crumb- and greased-covered face behind a mask of shame and humiliation. It has been a trying year for all of us, a veritable hundred years of solitude, made even more difficult by the extended absence of the greatest eating and cycling event on the planet. I speak of course of le Tour de Fritter. But despair no longer, mes amies: like you, Le Grand Spectacle is ready for its triumphant return!

Acknowledging the ongoing but mercifully improving restrictions related to the pandemic, the theme of this year’s Tour de Fritter is “Lard in the Time of Corona.”  Instead of a one-day, multiple-stage event with the enormous peloton and trailing caravan, followed by a group awards ceremony, this year Le Grand Spectacle is organized around a do-it-yourself (or with trusted friends) principle. While there will be three official events, competitors will be free to complete the rides on their own by themselves or with a trusted riding pod. To maximize the chance to earn Fritter Points, the event will extend over a two-week-plus period, beginning on June 4, National Donut Day, and extending through Father’s Day on June 20. During this time, competitors can complete any of the pre-defined routes as many times as they wish, amassing Fritter Points limited only by the strength of their legs and the fortitude of their stomachs. In addition to the routes provided, competitors may also create their own routes if they meet the rigorous standards of the TDF.

Specific details about TDF registration, rules and scoring procedures will be posted separately on this site. Here is the tentative list of scheduled events:

June 4, 2021, Friday: This is National Donut Day and the 2021 Tour de Fritter Donut Challenge will officially kick off by holding the Triple Bypass Donut Ride in combination with a regular Davis Bike Club ride: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/36195546

June 6, 2021, Sunday: After a rest day (or not) the Tour de Fritter will once again leverage and extend the existing Sunday Slacker club ride, this time to complete the Quadruple Bypass Donut Ride:  https://ridewithgps.com/routes/36195526

June 13 2021, Sunday: Let’s finish off this year’s Tour de Fritter with a bang by riding the Quintuple Bypass Donut Ride: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/36169941

Be sure to mark your calendars for these events, and consult the Davis Bike Club ride calendar for any last-minute updates. Remember, you can ride these routes any time during the June 4-20 time frame as many times as you like, or make your own routes, to earn Fritter Points. Hey people – it’s time to harden the fritter up! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity – don’t fritter it away!
